The Pustertal railway will see trains from the Austrian Railways, Trenitalia and as from December 2008, the new FLIRT trains from SAD Trasporto Locale SpA.
The Provincial Government of South Tyrol purchased eight FLIRT (Fast Light Innovative Regional Train) trains for the Pustertal railway. These trains are built by Stadler, a Swiss company specialising in electrotrains for public transport. Four trains comprise four carriages each, while the remaining four have six cars each. The total investment was just under 60 million euro. The trains are similar inside and outside to the ones already operating in the Venosta valley, including the official South Tyrol logo. The four-carriage trains (74 metres in length) can accommodate up to 405 passengers, while the six-carriage trains (106 metres in length) can seat up to 631. During the summer months, these trains may also carry up to 120 bicycles, while the seats can be reclined and turned into ski holders. This versatility makes them a valid alternative to automobiles, not only for commuters, holidaymakers, excursionists and sports enthusiasts.
